RF Laboratory

The RF Laboratory provides facilities for the fabrication and characterisation of materials, devices and circuits at high frequencies. The facility offers:

  • Anritsu ME7808B Broadband Network Analyzer (SMA connection up to 65 GHz and up to 325GHz with OMLINC Millimetre-Wave VNA Extender and microwave probing)

  • High Performance Microwave Probes (Picoprobe-GGB Industries & Cascade Microtech) from 150 µm pitch (DC-40 GHz), 100 µm (DC-40 GHz) and 75 µm pitch (DC-220 GHz)

  • High-precision X-Y-Z microstages for microwave probe and chip positioning

  • FFT Network Analyser Model SR770, bench top and portable RF spectrum analysers

  • Extensive range of voltage/current sources and standard test and measurement equipment

In addition, equipment is also available for the formation of larger, bulk samples and both low and high frequency dielectric testing over a wide temperature range. Facilities include:

  • Large furnace for conventional heating up to 1300°C

  • 25 ton unaxial press

  • LCR meter for low frequency (20Hz - 3MHz) testing

  • Room and high temperature coaxial probe characterisation (40MHz - 40GHz)

  • Airline for permittivity and permeability investigations (1GHz - 6GHz)

  • Resonant cavity for room and high temperature measurements (614MHz, 1411MHz, 2213MHz)
